Boiler Repair in Union Grove, NC
8% of Union Grove heats with oil, which makes a burner the exception on most streets here. Knowing that in advance is the difference between a scheduled visit and a February emergency.
In brief
In Union Grove, fuel oil accounts for 8% of household heating against 22% for gas. Where oil is this much of a minority, finding somebody who services burners matters more than describing what the boiler is doing.

How Union Grove heats
Being the only burner on the street has one advantage worth taking: the same contractor will remember your system. Where oil is common a visit is routine and anonymous; where it is rare it tends to be the same person each year, and continuity is worth more than it sounds on a machine that is serviced once a year.
| Households in Union Grove | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 8% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 22% |
| Electricity | 61% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 8% |
Across the 49 towns we cover in North Carolina, 7% of households heat with oil. Union Grove is small enough that its own oil share carries too wide a margin of error to place against that figure, so we do not.

The Census asks what the house is heated with, not what equipment does the heating. The oil share above therefore includes furnaces as well as boilers.
Carbon monoxide
CPSC puts it at more than 200 deaths a year in the United States from CO produced by non-automotive consumer products. Heating equipment is one source among several, and it is the one that runs unattended all winter.

Hot water or steam
Hot water or steam is the first thing a contractor will establish and the first thing worth knowing yourself. Steam systems have one pipe or two to each radiator, no circulating pump, and a sight glass on the boiler showing the water level. Hot water systems have a pump, a pressure gauge and an expansion tank.
DOE sets different efficiency minimums for the two — 84% against 82% on gas, 86% against 85% on oil — so the distinction reaches the paperwork as well as the pipework.

What to ask whoever comes
Ask whether the appliance is hot water or steam, and what its AFUE is. DOE’s minimums run 82 to 86 percent depending on fuel and type, so those two facts decide what a like-for-like comparison even means.
