Boiler Repair in Waterford, VA
Waterford splits its heating: 15% on oil, 51% on gas. Both feed boilers, and the two are different machines to own.
In brief
A town that splits its heating has both trades in it. Waterford does, at 15% of households on oil and 51% on gas, so knowing which appliance is in the basement before telephoning saves the wrong one turning up.

How Waterford heats
In a town split between fuels, the first useful fact is which one you have, because an oil boiler and a gas boiler are different machines to own. Oil has consumables and a tank; gas has neither.
The consequence is maintenance. Oil forces an annual appointment. Gas does not, and CPSC recommends one regardless.
| Households in Waterford | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 15% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 51% |
| Electricity | 31% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 3% |
Across the 56 towns we cover in Virginia, 9% of households heat with oil. Waterford is small enough that its own oil share carries too wide a margin of error to place against that figure, so we do not.

The table counts what a household burns, not what burns it. A furnace and a boiler on the same fuel are one number here, and we do not pretend otherwise.
Carbon monoxide
If a CO alarm sounds, CPSC’s instruction is to move outside to fresh air immediately, call emergency services or 911, do a headcount, and not go back in until responders say so. Not open windows first, and not look for the source.

Hot water or steam
Two systems share the name boiler and very little else. Steam distributes vapor and returns condensate by gravity; hot water pushes water round a loop with a pump and holds it under pressure. Radiators can look identical from the room.
The boiler tells you which: a sight glass means steam, a pressure gauge and an expansion tank mean hot water.

What to ask whoever comes
Ask where the water is going, on any system that will not hold pressure. Topping it up is not a repair, and each refill brings fresh oxygenated water into a loop designed to hold the same water for years.

Checking a plumber in Virginia
Virginia licenses are issued by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, which publishes a public search you can use before work begins.
A boiler is not a furnace, and the person you want knows the difference.Tell us it is a boiler, tell us what the gauge reads if you can see it, and we will route you to somebody in your area who works on them. You are never charged. Past boilers, Waterford is covered for the rest of it.
