Boiler Repair in Denver, PA
Denver splits its heating: 25% on oil, 28% on gas. Both feed boilers, and the two are different machines to own.
In brief
A town that splits its heating has both trades in it. Denver does, at 25% of households on oil and 28% on gas, so knowing which appliance is in the basement before telephoning saves the wrong one turning up.

How Denver heats
Federal efficiency minimums differ by fuel: DOE sets 84% AFUE for gas-fired hot water boilers and 86% for oil-fired hot water, with steam units slightly lower. So the two fuels are not held to the same standard, and a like-for-like comparison of quotes has to account for that.
| Households in Denver | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 25% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 28% |
| Electricity | 41% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 7% |
Across the 274 towns we cover in Pennsylvania, 19% of households heat with oil. Denver sits 13 points above that.

Carbon monoxide
The reason CPSC ties annual servicing to CO is that the failure is in the combustion or the venting rather than in the fuel. A system that heats perfectly well can be venting badly, and nothing inside the house will tell you except an alarm.

Hot water or steam
Hot water or steam is the first thing a contractor will establish and the first thing worth knowing yourself. Steam systems have one pipe or two to each radiator, no circulating pump, and a sight glass on the boiler showing the water level. Hot water systems have a pump, a pressure gauge and an expansion tank.
DOE sets different efficiency minimums for the two — 84% against 82% on gas, 86% against 85% on oil — so the distinction reaches the paperwork as well as the pipework.

What to ask whoever comes
Ask whether the fault was diagnosed or inferred. "It is probably the circulator" and "the circulator is drawing no current" are different sentences, and only one of them justifies a part.

Checking a plumber in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania has no state license for plumbers. Its Department of Labor and Industry states it has no jurisdiction and keeps no records of which municipalities require one, so the only reliable answer is your own city or township. Start here. Ask the contractor which municipality licenses them and confirm it with that office before work begins.
A boiler is not a furnace, and the person you want knows the difference.Tell us it is a boiler, tell us what the gauge reads if you can see it, and we will route you to somebody in your area who works on them. You are never charged. Should other work in Denver need doing, say it on the call.
