Carbon monoxide

CPSC recommends CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas, and specifically not in kitchens or above fuel-burning appliances. The instinct is to put one next to the boiler, and that is the one place the guidance says not to.

Hot water or steam

The quickest way to tell is the water. A hot water system is a sealed loop under pressure with a gauge reading psi; a steam system boils, sends vapor up and lets the condensate run back down by gravity. They are serviced differently and they fail differently, and knowing which you have shortens the first call.
