Boiler Repair in Westville, NJ
Oil heats 7% of homes in Westville. If that includes yours, the thing to sort out before a cold snap is who services oil equipment nearby — not because it is hard, but because there are fewer of them.
In brief
An oil-fired boiler is the exception in Westville: 7% of households heat with fuel oil and 75% with gas. The figure measures house heating fuel rather than the appliance, which is why the fuel and the make are both worth having before anybody is called.

How Westville heats
Being one of the few oil households in a town changes availability rather than the machine. Fewer contractors nearby service burners routinely, and February is the wrong month to find that out.
Establishing who does the work before you need them is the whole of the advice here, and it costs nothing in September.
| Households in Westville | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 7% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 75% |
| Electricity | 18% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 1% |
Across the 113 towns we cover in New Jersey, 12% of households heat with oil. Westville sits about level with that.

The Census asks what the house is heated with, not what equipment does the heating. The oil share above therefore includes furnaces as well as boilers.
Carbon monoxide
CPSC recommends CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas, and specifically not in kitchens or above fuel-burning appliances. The instinct is to put one next to the boiler, and that is the one place the guidance says not to.

Hot water or steam
Hot water or steam is the first thing a contractor will establish and the first thing worth knowing yourself. Steam systems have one pipe or two to each radiator, no circulating pump, and a sight glass on the boiler showing the water level. Hot water systems have a pump, a pressure gauge and an expansion tank.
DOE sets different efficiency minimums for the two — 84% against 82% on gas, 86% against 85% on oil — so the distinction reaches the paperwork as well as the pipework.

What to ask whoever comes
Ask whether the temperature control was commissioned or merely fitted. DOE requires an automatic means for adjusting water temperature on hot water boilers, and a control nobody set up delivers none of what it is for.

Checking a plumber in New Jersey
New Jersey licenses are issued by the New Jersey State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers, Division of Consumer Affairs, which publishes a public search you can use before work begins.
A boiler is not a furnace, and the person you want knows the difference.Tell us it is a boiler, tell us what the gauge reads if you can see it, and we will route you to somebody in your area who works on them. You are never charged. Past boilers, Westville is covered for the rest of it.
