Hot water or steam

Hot water or steam is the first thing a contractor will establish and the first thing worth knowing yourself. Steam systems have one pipe or two to each radiator, no circulating pump, and a sight glass on the boiler showing the water level. Hot water systems have a pump, a pressure gauge and an expansion tank.

DOE sets different efficiency minimums for the two — 84% against 82% on gas, 86% against 85% on oil — so the distinction reaches the paperwork as well as the pipework.

What to ask whoever comes

Ask whether the temperature control was commissioned or merely fitted. DOE requires an automatic means for adjusting water temperature on hot water boilers, and a control nobody set up delivers none of what it is for.
