Boiler Repair in Cookstown, NJ
Oil accounts for 17% of heating in Cookstown, gas for 46%. On a split like this the first five minutes of any call is establishing which one you have, so it is worth knowing before you dial.
In brief
Fuel oil heats 17% of homes in Cookstown, a substantial minority alongside gas at 46%. Which one a property burns decides the trade as much as the fault does, because an oil burner is a serviced appliance and a gas boiler is a different machine with different controls.

How Cookstown heats
Both fuels feed boilers and both burn indoors, so both can produce carbon monoxide when combustion or venting goes wrong. CPSC’s guidance does not vary by fuel: alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas, and annual professional service.
| Households in Cookstown | Share |
|---|---|
| Fuel oil and kerosene | 17% |
| Gas — mains and bottled | 46% |
| Electricity | 30% |
| Wood, coal, solar or no fuel | 7% |
Across the 113 towns we cover in New Jersey, 12% of households heat with oil. Cookstown is small enough that its own oil share carries too wide a margin of error to place against that figure, so we do not.
Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates, table B25040 (house heating fuel), 2023 release. Universe: 344 occupied housing units. The Census asks what the house is heated with, not what equipment does the heating. The oil share above therefore includes furnaces as well as boilers.
Carbon monoxide
"Have the heating system professionally inspected and serviced annually to ensure proper operation" is CPSC’s wording, and it is a safety recommendation about combustion and venting rather than an efficiency suggestion.

Hot water or steam
Look for a sight glass. A short vertical tube of water on the side of the boiler means steam, and with it a low water cutoff that has to be checked. No sight glass, a pressure gauge and a small pump on a pipe means hot water.

What to ask whoever comes
Ask whether the appliance is hot water or steam, and what its AFUE is. DOE’s minimums run 82 to 86 percent depending on fuel and type, so those two facts decide what a like-for-like comparison even means.
